No 41 - 7th July 2026 - Round Up

After North Yorkshire Council issued their formal refusal decision for the drilling application in Burniston see details here, Europa Oil and Gas Ltd vowed to make an appeal. So we need to be on our guard! The steering committee have their eyes peeled for any developments. EOG Ltd have until the end of November to lodge their appeal.

FFCC have prepared as much as possible in case of an appeal. We have legal advice, press releases, events, and documents lined up. Legal brains will check the grounds of any appeal from EOG and will let us know if we have a case against. If so we will step up fundraising and will identify ourselves as an interested party. We know Friends of the Earth also plan to identify themselves as an interested party.

In the meantime - please enjoy our social events, help other groups - see below, and keep in touch.

THE SIZE OF THE THREAT

The oil and gas companies are making moves all around us. Drill or Drop created this interactive map in 2015 - it has lots of detail but some of it is out of date. Here is the most recent map of Northern England

Apart from Burniston, there are ongoing planning applications in Foxholes, West Newton, and a new one near Ebberston in the National Park. The same few companies are involved in most of these.

Pease help send these oil and gas companies packing. Here are a few things you can do to help:

BURNISTON: Sign this petition to ban all fracking. Continue writing to the government to ask them to put an amendment into the new law to include the ban on low pressure fracking (proppant squeeze). Write to NYC to urge them to fight any appeal by EOG robustly.

WEST NEWTON:  help by donating here go fund me page to help West Newton. See newsletter 40 for full details.

Please object by writing to planning.control@northyorks.gov.uk reference REF:NY/2025/0113/FUL.  You could also write to the MP Kevin Hollinrake and the NYC ward councillor Email: cllr.janet.sanderson@northyorks.gov.uk regarding lack of support and to show your feelings.  See newsletter 40 for full details.

EBBERSTON:  See details here in a Drill or Drop article. The oil and gas company are holding an open meeting Thursday 9 July 2026 3pm-7pm.Ebberston Village Hall, 56 Main Street, Ebberston YO13 9NS. Please attend if you can. Other campaign groups will be attending if anyone in the Ebberston area would like to contact them for help.

FIGHTING MISINFORMATION

The oil and gas industry have dedicated PR teams sending out incorrect and misleading information. This one - "we need Yorkshire Gas for Yorkshire" from Will Holland for example. Hint: this is not possible.

To answer the claim that our own onshore gas and oil will bring our bills down: Government advisors have said that households are paying more for their energy because the government are not electrifying quickly enough. All gas and oil is priced as international commodities - so gas prices will not be lowered if it is drilled in the UK. There is an issue in the UK that electricity - even from solar and wind farms - is priced the same as electricity produced from coal and gas. There have been calls to separate electricity prices as renewable sources are much cheaper and should not be linked to the international commodity prices. See this article on Drill or Drop regarding the advice given to the government.

Video shown at Foxholes on 11th May 2026. (Facebook) It is a real video showing what the actual impact of drilling is on a community. It is horrendous. If you ever heard Europa say 'you wont even notice it' then just look here for the real truth. Its worth watching the whole video.

WHO ARE FFCC - Frack Free Costal Communities?

We are a local group, who have been campaigning regionally and nationally, from the villages on the North Yorkshire Heritage coast including Burniston, Cloughton, Scalby, Staintondale and Ravenscar. We want to protect our beautiful heritage coastline from industrialisation and the irreversible damage to our local environment, and the wider climate that Europa’s ‘Proppant squeeze’ (fracking) would cause. We believe the use of fossil fuels are destroying our planet and fracking should be banned in all forms.

We need to spread the message further. We would love to hear from any environmental organisations with national reach who might be able to help us spread the message nationwide.

WHAT IS FRACKING - AND WHY IS ALL ON SHORE FRACKING NOT BANNED NOW?

Fracking is short for Hydraulic Fracturing. Hydraulic Fracturing is a process that uses fluids to fracture rocks. Lower volume fracturing is not prevented by the moratorium on associated hydraulic fracturing, which was introduced in 2019. The moratorium affects only operations using more than 1,000m3 of fluid per fracturing stage or 10,000m3 in total. This volume is more than was used in Lancashire causing earthquakes which damaged properties and resulted in the moratorium!  Opponents have described this as a loophole in the law and called for a wider ban to include lower volume fracking. This planning application by Europa, if approved, will set a precedent for the many applications waiting in the wings. The government has replied to a parliamentary petition to ban 'small scale fracking' saying “the government recognises concerns from local communities regarding low volume fracturing and the fact that it is currently treated differently, and is therefore currently reviewing the position with regard to low volume hydraulic fracturing.” In the 2025 Labour Conference, Ed Milliband said (as reported by Drill or Drop) “I say let’s ban fracking and send this bunch of frackers packing too”.

Thank you for your support
