No 40 - EUROPA TO APPEAL REFUSAL DECISION.

North Yorkshire Council have issued their formal refusal decision about the drilling application in Burniston including the grounds for refusal. See the details here. This is a great victory for local democracy, community campaigning and common sense and we can all celebrate this decision. However, Europa said they will appeal and are confident they will win. So this has only gone away temporarily - we need to be on our guard!

Drill or Drop reports on the matter here including a reaction from Europa.

KEEP IT IN THE GROUND.webp

FIGHT FOR THE LAW TO BE CHANGED TO BAN FRACKING IN ALL ITS FORMS

There are many applications for fracking apart from in our own area. Nest Newton and Foxholes to name just two. Ed Miliband said he was going to ban all fracking. What does Ed Miliband mean by 'all fracking' though? So far the moratorium only includes fracking above a certain volume of fluid - this is ridiculous because lower volumes also fracture rocks (fracking). We need all fracking needs to be banned by law.

In the King's Speech the government has included the ban on fracking without specifying the 'type' of fracking that will be banned. There are lots of people lobbying the governmnet to include all types of fracking. Drill or Drop has written a great article to explain the issue.

Our MP Alison Hume spoke in parliament about this during the week. See this Facebook link.

Video shown at Foxholes on 11th May 2026. (Facebook) It is a real video showing what the actual impact of drilling is on a community. It is horrendous. If you ever heard Europa say 'you wont even notice it' then just look here for the real truth. Its worth watching the whole video.

Friends of the Earth has sent out this communication to ask people to sign a petition to ban. Please sign this if you have not signed it already. You can also write to Ed Miliband to ask him to ban all types fracking. The only way we can stop these companies is to ban fracking by law once and for all.

PLEASE HELP OUR NEIGHBOURS.

We can easily help our neighbours with their fight against the oil and gas companies. We need to send the message to the oil and gas companies - not here and not anywhere!

FOXHOLES: Population 250 - are fighting an application by Egdon to drill through the chalk wolds (through an aquifer). They had a great meeting on 11th May and are appealing for help. This article by Drill or Drop explains the situation and a summary of the meeting. Also please check Drawing a Line in the Chalk on Facebook. You can write an objection to planning.control@northyorks.gov.uk reference REF:NY/2025/0113/FUL. Please put your name and address on the email. You can write in as many times as you wish no matter where you live, and you can get ideas of what to object to in the Drill or Drop article. The most obvious concern is the water quality! You could also write to the MP Kevin Hollinrake and the NYC ward councillor Email: cllr.janet.sanderson@northyorks.gov.uk regarding lack of support and to show your feelings.

WEST NEWTON SAYS NO!! Has a complex history and currently 'conventional' drilling is taking place. The Environment Agency has just given permission for the company to use fracking! Peter Lomas is taking the EA to court on several grounds regarding this decision. Peter needs to raise £20K for this battle. See their facebook page here.

We had a hoot of a night last Saturday at the Old School Band evening in Burniston. Only a few people didn't get up to dance.

WHO ARE FFCC - Frack Free Costal Communities?

We are a local group, who have been campaigning regionally and nationally, from the villages on the North Yorkshire Heritage coast including Burniston, Cloughton, Scalby, Staintondale and Ravenscar. We want to protect our beautiful heritage coastline from industrialisation and the irreversible damage to our local environment, and the wider climate that Europa’s ‘Proppant squeeze’ (fracking) would cause. We believe the use of fossil fuels are destroying our planet and fracking should be banned in all forms.

We need to spread the message further. We would love to hear from any environmental organisations with national reach who might be able to help us spread the message nationwide.

WHAT IS FRACKING - AND WHY IS ALL ON SHORE FRACKING NOT BANNED NOW?

Fracking is short for Hydraulic Fracturing. Hydraulic Fracturing is a process that uses fluids to fracture rocks. Lower volume fracturing is not prevented by the moratorium on associated hydraulic fracturing, which was introduced in 2019. The moratorium affects only operations using more than 1,000m3 of fluid per fracturing stage or 10,000m3 in total. This volume is more than was used in Lancashire causing earthquakes which damaged properties and resulted in the moratorium!  Opponents have described this as a loophole in the law and called for a wider ban to include lower volume fracking. This planning application by Europa, if approved, will set a precedent for the many applications waiting in the wings. The government has replied to a parliamentary petition to ban 'small scale fracking' saying “the government recognises concerns from local communities regarding low volume fracturing and the fact that it is currently treated differently, and is therefore currently reviewing the position with regard to low volume hydraulic fracturing.” In the 2025 Labour Conference, Ed Milliband said (as reported by Drill or Drop) “I say let’s ban fracking and send this bunch of frackers packing too”.
