No 32 - CALLING IT IN - WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

FFCC CALL IN LETTER - What happens next?

Frack Free Coastal Communities, through our Steering Group, have requested that the Secretary of State should Call in Planning Application NY/2025/0030/ENV – Construction for a Temporary Well Site for Gas Appraisal at Burniston, North Yorkshire Heritage Coast.
1. The initial stage of this process is that the Planning Casework Unit (i.e. a planning inspector) is screening our request to see if it meets the criteria for a call in. We are confident it does.
2. The next stage is information gathering. The inspector will examine the documents on the North Yorkshire planning portal together with any relevant information before deciding whether to advise the Secretary of State to call in the application. At this point emerging national policy (such as the proposed NPPF [National Planning Policy Framework] reforms on fossil fuel extraction) is particularly relevant as are climate change implications, and consistency of decision making nationally.
3. The Planning Casework Unit then advises the Secretary of State whether to call in the application or not. That is out aim and one way we can all influence the decision is by submitting our own call in request to pcu@communities.gov.uk
The more requests that are received by the Secretary of State the Better, from individuals, Parish or Town Councils, and groups. Find detailed instructions here in newsletter 29.

FFCC TO ASK NYC TO SELF REFER
REQUEST FOR NYC TO SELF REFER TO THE PLANNING ADVISORY SERVICE

Burniston Parish Council and Cllr Derek Bastiman wrote an excellent letter to North Yorkshire Council (see here) raising serious concerns about the way in which the planners have handled Europa’s planning application and the consultation process, and asking NYC to self refer themselves to the PAS.
FFCC have decided to send their own letter to ask the council to self-refer themselves and is compiling a list of failures as experienced by FFCC supporters. This will increase awareness of the poor quality of the planners’ work among planning committee members, other NYC councillors and also the civil servants who are now considering whether the planning application should be called in by the Secretary of State. Europa Shares Drop 16% with ‘going concern warning’

It has been reported on Drill or Drop that the company behind plans for lower-volume fracking in Burniston, North Yorkshire, warned today it could go out of business if shareholders did not approve a £3.5m fundraising later this month. Interesting this is happening now and not before the NYC strategic planning committee were supposed to have met.
Friends of the Earth Petition to make the fracking ban permanent.
Our petition is closed and has an encouraging response from the government - see here. In the meantime please consider supporting this Petition from Friends of the Earth.
