No 27 - This newsletter is dedicated to one thing: LAST DITCH EFFORT TO INFLUENCE NYC'S FRACKING DECISION -  Read below or read on our website.

 

The North Yorkshire Council (NYC) strategic committee are getting ever nearer to decision time for Europa Oil and Gas Ltd’s application to frack for gas in Burniston. This is a critical decision that affects not only local our communities but also the broader interests of our nation. Please write urgently requesting NYC consider the following three points.

1. **Defer the Decision**: There are several compelling reasons to delay the decision.

a. Councillor Crane of NYC has reached out to the government for guidance on upcoming policy and legal changes that may impact this decision. It is essential to wait for their response before proceeding.

b. The government has made a commitment to permanently ban ALL fracking, which is expected to be confirmed in the forthcoming Energy Independence Bill in this Spring 2026.

c. The draft National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) is currently under consultation until only March 10, 2026, which contains significant implications for the proposed fracking operations—specifically, the proposed change to “remove the weight given to mineral extraction benefits”. These changes directly impact the viability of EOG's application, which heavily relies on the current policy.

2. **Local Meeting**: Please request that the planning meeting regarding this application be held in Scarborough. Holding it locally will ensure that all interested parties and affected residents can attend the meeting.

 

3. **Site Visit**: Please urge the councilors involved in the voting process to visit the Burniston site personally before making the decision. Understanding the local environment will provide vital context when considering this application.
