No 23 - ALISON HUME MP & COUNCILLORS IN BURNISTON

Alison Hume MP held a public meeting in Burniston to give residents a chance to ask her and North Yorkshire Councillors about fracking. With Alison Hume (MP) on the panel were, North Yorkshire Councillors Derek Bastiman, Steve Mason and Janet Jefferson and Chair or Burniston Parish Council Cllr Richard Parsons. The meeting was a huge success and some very thoughtful questions were asked by the public. Not a single voice was heard in favour of the application. Drill or Drop has written an article about the meeting.
IS EUROPA STRAPPED FOR CASH?

Europa and Egdon are looking for investors to raise over £6.5 to fund the 3D Seismic study and build the appraisal well in Burniston in return for up to 40% equity in the project. Click here for the 'flyer' from Envoi. Ruth Hayhusrt from Drill or Drop investigates this turn of events and reports on resident's worries about the financial status of Europa in this article.
Investigation by a member of Frack Free Coastal Communities shows that from 2009 to 2024, Europa has only made a profit in 3 of these years - and those profits are modest. Initially the 3D siesmic study was due to take place in the last quarter of 2024. It has been rescheduled and cancelled several times since, and was due to be carried out on Oct 15th. This simply didn't happen and now the company says it is planning for the 3D siesmic study to take place in the first quarter of 2026. Has Europa run out of funds?
With the strength of local opposition to the Burniston project, as well as pledges from Ed Milliband and Michael Shanks that onshore fracking will be completely banned, we wouldn't be surprised if investors were getting cold feet.

REMINDER OF WHY WE ARE DOING THIS:

FLARING - WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

Flares are flares be they for burning gasses for fracking projects or a chemical plant. This horrendous article from the BBC describes how an area 11 miles wide has been terrorized by flaring emission breaches which went on for almost a week. The Scottish environmental watchdog Septa received 900 complaints in relation to the dark smoke and noise caused by almost a whole week of continuous flaring.
Linda Holt said "The fine was too lenient." and "It took years for enforcement to catch up with a week-long flaring event that caused extreme noise and light pollution, sleepless nights, and genuine fear among residents who live beside the plant."
This type of thing reminds us here in North Yorkshire that just having a flare is a risk in itself. DONT LET THEM IN.
STILL TIME TO OBJECT

The planning decisions have not yet been made for either the Burniston or Foxholes planning applications and this means there is still a chance to submit your objection. In both cases email planning.control@northyorks.gov.uk with your objection. Please make sure you include your name and address. The earliest the Burniston application could possibly be considered by NYC is on 9th December. For Foxholes, DO NOT mention fracking as this is not (yet??) being applied for.

PETITION NEWS

We now have now over 10,000 signatures on our petition to ban ‘small scale fracking’. This is a massive achievement- thank you all so much for all your efforts. On the petition page it says the government will respond and we have been waiting for a response for 26 days. We wait with baited breath!! Drill or Drop has explained what small scale fracking is very eloquently in this article of 15th Oct 2025.

FFCC ERECT TWO NEW BANNERS

FFCC have put up 2 new banners which we hope will raise awareness of a) the gas waste facility at the top of Barmoor Lane in Scalby and b) show how near the drilling site is to residential houses in Burniston. We hope you like them. Again thanks go to our donors.
DONATIONS

We would like to thank all our very generous donators without whom we would not be able to carry out the work we do.

Thank You
