No. 19 ENVIRONMENT AGENCY NEWS:

CURRENT STATUS: North Yorkshire Council have still to decide on the planning application and at the same time Europa have applied for various permits to the Environment Agency. The EA's closing date for objections is 19th September 2025.The Environment Agency are holding a drop in session in Burniston and Cloughton Village Hall on 3rd September from 12 to 4pm. Please find the notice here.

HOW TO OBJECT TO EUROPA's APPLICATION FOR PERMITS TO THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY. Some very dedicated FFCC people have read through the permit documents and made a long awaited summary of     what you can comment on. It may also help you to know what questions to ask at the drop in session.

FFCC ASKS FOR AN EXTENSION TO THE CONSULTION PERIOD. This is the letter sent by Chris Garforth of FFCC to the Environment Agency requesting an extension to the consultation period and the reasons why.

Please let the EA and NYC know about these 'discrepancies'  You can still object to and view other comments on the planning application here (go to documents and click on 'Comment on this application').

PETITION NEWS

We are coming close to 10,000 signatures. At 10,000 the government will respond to our petition. At 100,000 votes we get a debate in parliament. There is no surer way to beat the frackers than to ban fracking altogether by law.

BEWARE NEWBY AND SCALBY

The good people of Newby and Scalby may not be aware - but although the drill is going to be situated in Burniston, the target area for fracking is under Barmoor Lane and will affect a large area. Europa have asked the Environment Agency for permission to leave (forever) toxic waste (the fracking liquid) in the ground at the site of the fracking itself. The seismic risks will be highest where the fracking is taking place. Here is a map provided by Europa to show exactly where their first target area for fracking is. When and if the drilling becomes permanent, there will be several more target areas covering Cloughton and Scalby and most likely into the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.

QUIZ NIGHT

Our quiz night on AUG 22nd was a huge success and raised over £700. People enjoyed it so much that they have been asking for another. Watch this space!

REMINDERS OF WHAT WE ARE FIGHTING AGAINST

The destruction caused by fracking operations in our countryside cannot be exaggerated. See this article from DRILL OR DROP describing how Cuadrilla have failed to clean up their operation in Lancashire in Preston New Road. Just look at the photos in the article showing the absolute desecration of the countryside. These Oil and Gas Companies are not to be trusted to obey the laws of the land - they are all about profit.

DRILL OR DROP

WE (STILL) NEED SOME HELP

1) We would like to hear from anyone with specialist knowledge of industrial waste categories. For example the thresholds that would define 'Category A' in the Mining Waste Directives - especially where the waste is toxic, liquid and to be stored underground.

2) We would like some input from locals in the area to check if the lists of special 'receptors' in the  EA applications. Receptors are simply people, houses, businesses, farms etc who will be affected by the fracking operation. We have found many missing receptors (residential, designated sites etc) and could do with some help to identify all or most of them. Note that 'Burniston' is counted as just one receptor!! In the EA application receptors are listed in the following documents:

  • Application Bespoke A001 05 Waste Management Plan Page 17

  • Application Bespoke A001 06 Site Condition Report Page 15 (5.2 and 5.3), Page 23 (6.2)

  • Application Bespoke A001 07a Environmental Risk Assessment Table on page 3 (statutory and designated receptors), table on page 5 (sensitive receptors), table page 8 (Statutory and Designated Water Receptors),

3) Missing surface water items in the following

  • Application Bespoke A001 07a Environmental Risk Assessment (table on page 6)

  • ZG-EOG-CLTN-EPR-04-08 Extent of Mining Waste Facility Plan 10000 Scale A3

DONATIONS

We would like to thank all our very generous donators without whom we would not be able to carry out the work we do.
