PARLIAMENTARY AND GOVERNMENT NEWS

FRIENDS OF THE EARTH: Following on from the King's Council opinion that proppant squeeze is fracking and should be treated as such (reported in our last newsletter - (read full PRESS RELEASE re the KC opinion)) Friends of the Earth has written to Ed Miliband (Energy Secretary) asking to widen the moratorium on fracking SEE LETTER.

HERE IS AN ARTICLE about it by Ruth Hayhurst in Drill or Drop.

THIS IS THE FULL PRESS RELEASE from Friends of the Earth.

It is fantastic that so much pressure is being put on the government and we hope they are listening! It is time to stop fracking for good.

ALISON HUME, MP for Whitby and Scarborough, spoke in parliament to ask for the government to allocate time for a debate on Fracking. . Here she is calling for the government to allocate a time to debate CLICK HERE TO SEE FACEBOOK VIDEO

FFCC sends best wishes and congratulations to Alison Hume for her first year in office. We are very grateful for her support in our campaign.

David Skaith - Mayor of York and North Yorkshire attended Alison Hume's  one year celebrations. David said 'I couldn't be more opposed to fracking'.

SCARBOROUGH COUNCIL UNAMIMOUS IN REJECTING EUROPA PLANNING APPLICATION

The new Scarborough Town Council (with a 11/15 RFORM majority) has voted unanimously against the Europa planning application in Burniston. They join Burniston, Cloughton and Newby & Scalby local councils in strongly objecting to the planning application. We are delighted with this unexpected but very welcome vote. We hope North Yorkshire Council are listening to the residents of the whole area.

Read the objection from Scarborough Town Council to the North Yorkshire Council portal HERE in full. Ruth Hayhurst has written AN ARTICLE about the vote in DRILL OR DROP - again a great article - thank you Ruth. The BBC News has also written a SUMMARY of the above.

(A BIT of a BOAST) - Friends of the Earth  (London) shared THIS ARTICLE From YORKPRESS regarding the Scarborough Town Council vote.

Friends of the Earth said about Frack Free Coastal Communities:-

This is fantastic news, and testament to the tireless local opposition to this project, including action group Frack Free Coastal Communities.

Great to see our letters and barrister Estelle Dehon KC's advice referenced in this decision.

While Scarborough Town Council is not the decision-maker for Europa Oil and Gas Ltd's planning application to explore for gas via "proppant squeeze" - or as we call it "fracking by the back door" - this vote is an important signal to the Planning Authority, North Yorkshire Council.

It's especially striking that this was a decision from a Reform-led council, given the party's national policy is pro-fracking.

It's proof of the power of local voices and they're saying, loud and clear, NO to fracking.

THATS TV INTERVIEWS THE CHAIR OF BURNISTON PARISH COUNCIL

That's TV interviewed Richard Parsons to find out more about the fracking application and the local council's opposition and the effect this would have on the area, the residents, the tourists and the environment.

In response Europa said The UK oil and gas industry is highly regulated and local considerations are factored into any developments. A good example of this is the Wytch Farm field in Dorset which is located on the banks of Poole Harbour in an area of outstanding natural beauty and adjacent to some of the most expensive real estate in the country. The thousands of tourists that visit Poole Harbour every year are oblivious to the fact they are holidaying next to the UK's largest onshore oil field.

Locals were incensed at this glib remark from Europa and the insinuation that if its good enough for them its good enough for us. A quick look on the internet quickly revealed things have not gone as well as Europa might have wanted us to believe - for example this article by the BBC reporting on the leaking of 200 barrels of oily water into the beautiful Poole Harbour from the pipelines at Wytch Farm. I bet the holiday makers didn't go for a swim then.

MISINFORMATION - AN UPDATE - IT IS STILL POSSIBLE TO OBJECT

There was a Facebook Post on What's on in Scarborough saying that NYC were going to decide on the Europa application within 2 weeks and consultation was closed. So please let us use this as an opportunity to let you know you can still OBJECT to the application and that NYC have not yet even planned a meeting to discuss this planning application.
